The Anglican Church of North America
Since the late 19th century, various parishes, clergy, and laity within the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada have disaffiliated due to growing concerns over theological and doctrinal changes they viewed as contrary to biblical and historic Anglican teachings. By the early 21st century, the need for a new orthodox Anglican province in North America had become increasingly evident. In response, the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) was formed at the request of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in June 2008. After a thorough review of its leadership, organizational structure, proposed constitution, and canons, ACNA was officially recognized on April 16, 2009, by the GAFCON Primates—leaders representing Anglican churches comprising 70% of active Anglicans worldwide. Within ACNA, the Reformed Episcopal Church (REC) functions as an autonomous province. While recognizing The Most Reverend Dr. Foley Beach as the Archbishop of ACNA, the REC maintains its own governance under the leadership of its Presiding Bishop and episcopate.
